Zinedine Zidane Reveals His Favorite Premier League Stadiums

Zinedine Zidane named two Premier League stadiums when asked which grounds he most liked to visit during his legendary career.

The French football icon, widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, had a storied career spanning top European clubs. Zidane made his mark at Bordeaux before moving to Juventus and eventually becoming a ‘Galactico’ signing at Real Madrid.

His international achievements are equally impressive, most notably inspiring France to World Cup glory in 1998 with a memorable brace against Brazil in the final that ended 3-0.

After hanging up his boots, Zidane transitioned into management where he continued his winning ways, securing an unprecedented three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid.

The Bernabeu Tops Zidane’s List, But Premier League Venues Left Their Mark

Having experienced numerous world-class venues throughout his career, Zidane naturally holds a special place in his heart for the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid’s iconic home stadium.

“The [Santiago] Bernabeu is top, top, top,” he told Real Madrid’s YouTube channel in September 2024. “For me, the Bernabeu is number one. The people, stadium, everything, the history that the club has, the best.”

However, when discussing his favorite away grounds, Zidane specifically highlighted two Premier League stadiums that left a lasting impression:

  • Anfield (Liverpool FC)
  • Old Trafford (Manchester United)

“Liverpool,” he stated before adding, “I also remember Manchester United. We played some impressive matches against them [at Old Trafford].”

Zidane’s experiences at these English football cathedrals came in various competitions:

Stadium Notable Appearances
Anfield – Euro 1996 quarter-final (France vs Netherlands)
– 2021 Champions League quarter-final (as Real Madrid manager)
Old Trafford – Four appearances as a player
– Notable match: Manchester United 4-3 Real Madrid (April 2003)

Interestingly, while Zidane never played club football at Anfield, he did experience the famous atmosphere during international duty. At Euro 1996, he scored France’s first penalty in their shootout victory against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

Years later, he returned to Anfield as Real Madrid’s manager, guiding his team to a goalless draw in the 2021 Champions League quarter-finals.

Old Trafford provided Zidane with more club football experiences. The midfield maestro played at Manchester United’s home ground on four occasions during his career with a record of one win, one draw, and two losses. His victory came with Juventus in November 1996.

He also participated in the thrilling Champions League encounter in April 2003 when Manchester United defeated Real Madrid 4-3, though Real progressed to the next round on aggregate.
