Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold’s agent has reportedly engaged in discussions with another major European club, adding a surprising twist to his anticipated move to Real Madrid.
Speculation surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool has been rampant since the beginning of the 2024/25 season. With his contract nearing its end, the possibility of a transfer has become a significant talking point in football circles.
For months, Real Madrid have been consistently linked with the England international, identifying him as a key target for the upcoming transfer window. Reports earlier in the week suggested that a transfer to the Spanish capital for Alexander-Arnold was becoming increasingly likely.

However, in a turn of events reported by Spanish news outlet AS, it has emerged that Alexander-Arnold’s agent has also held talks with Real Madrid’s arch-rivals, Barcelona. This revelation introduces a new dimension to the transfer narrative, suggesting that the right-back might have more options than initially anticipated.
Journalist Sique Rodriguez, speaking to SER Catalunya, disclosed Barcelona’s interest: “There have been meetings, recently and in the past few years, to explore the possibility of Alexander-Arnold joining Barca.”
Rodriguez further stated, “Barcelona’s interest dates back to when Xavi Hernández and Jordi Cruyff were at the club. Meetings were held previously to assess the potential signing.” This indicates a sustained interest from the Catalan giants in the Liverpool defender.
Despite these discussions, it appears Barcelona may have missed their chance to secure Alexander-Arnold’s signature. Current indications suggest that the 26-year-old is now heavily favored to make the move to Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Interestingly, Alexander-Arnold himself expressed admiration for Barcelona in a 2020 interview with GQ. “My favorite team besides Liverpool? Would be Barca,” he admitted. “I feel they share similar values and beliefs with Liverpool. They emphasize academy players. I grew up watching Messi and that iconic Barcelona team with Iniesta, Xavi, Henry, and Eto’o.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, on the Stick To Football podcast, expressed his perspective on the potential transfer: “As a local player and a Liverpool supporter, I’m disappointed if he feels he needs to leave. Liverpool are consistently competing for the Premier League and Champions League. From Trent’s position as a local lad, you’d think he’d want to stay and aim to surpass Manchester United’s league title record with Liverpool and add more European trophies to his cabinet over the next seven or eight years.”
