Roy Keane Names Manchester United Star He’s “Not Convinced” By in Scathing Assessment
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has delivered a harsh critique of his former club, singling out goalkeeper Andre Onana as a player he remains unconvinced by. Speaking ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Keane outlined multiple issues facing new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils entered Sunday’s Old Trafford showdown following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in European competition and an early exit from the FA Cup last weekend. These results have only intensified scrutiny on the team’s performances.
In his pre-match analysis on Sky Sports, Keane didn’t hold back when assessing United’s current predicament:
“[The club’s problems have] been well-documented,” Keane stated. “The problems, there’s been no real reaction to the new manager coming in. Results haven’t been great. A few injuries.”
He continued by highlighting specific weaknesses: “They don’t look like they’ve got many goals in them. Not great at set pieces. They don’t look very dynamic. Still not convinced with the goalkeeper.”
Keane’s mention of the goalkeeper was particularly notable, as Onana has struggled to consistently impress since his £43.8 million move from Inter Milan. The Cameroonian international was brought in by former manager Erik ten Hag, who had previously worked with him at Ajax.
Onana’s Uncertain Future at Old Trafford
Despite making 51 appearances last season and featuring in 37 matches across all competitions in the current campaign, Onana’s performances have drawn criticism from fans and pundits alike. His inconsistency between the posts has raised questions about whether he’s the right long-term solution for Manchester United.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper now faces an uncertain future at the club, with reports suggesting he could be among several Ten Hag signings that Amorim may look to replace when the transfer window reopens this summer.
Keane’s assessment of United’s broader problems was equally blunt: “We keep discussing this every time we focus on United. So many problems. But they have to try and get some belief, confidence back into the group. Find something from within the dressing room.”
The issues identified by Keane include:
- Lack of reaction to the new manager
- Poor recent results
- Ongoing injury concerns
- Limited goal-scoring capability
- Vulnerability at set pieces
- Lack of dynamism in play
- Questionable goalkeeper performances
As Manchester United continues to search for stability and improved performances under Amorim’s leadership, the spotlight remains firmly on players like Onana who have yet to fully convince club legends like Keane of their quality and suitability for the team.
For United supporters, the hope remains that the team can find the internal strength and character that Keane referenced to turn their fortunes around before the end of the season.
