Veteran defender Sergio Ramos is facing criticism after a controversial social media post following his first red card for Mexican side Monterrey. The former Real Madrid and Spain star, known for his decorated career and strong tackles, received the sending off in a recent Liga MX match, adding another chapter to his long history with disciplinary incidents on the pitch.
Ramos, aged 38, made a high-profile move to Monterrey in February, joining the Liga MX champions on a one-year deal. Reportedly earning a substantial €5 million per season, the experienced centre-back is the highest-paid player in the squad and was expected to bring leadership and quality to the Mexican league.

Ramos’s Social Media Post Ignites Further Controversy
Following the match and his sending off, Sergio Ramos took to social media to comment on the game. His post, intended to be light-hearted, however, provoked anger, particularly amongst the U.N.A.M. team and their supporters.
Ramos posted: “Very important win away from home against a difficult team. Time to rest and prepare what’s next. P.S.: It was obvious I couldn’t leave this league without a red card.”
This post, specifically the postscript remark, was interpreted by many as disrespectful and dismissive of the red card offense and the Mexican league. Efrain Juarez, the head coach of U.N.A.M., voiced strong disapproval, arguing that Ramos, regardless of his fame, should be held accountable for his actions like any other player.
Juarez stated, “Whatever his name is, it has to be an example. If someone from our country had done that, they’d be out from the 20th minute, not the 90th, trying to make amends. That bothers me. We must protect our football. He [Ramos] elbowed a kid who, just the day before, said he was his idol.” Juarez’s comments highlighted the frustration that Ramos, a renowned international player, appeared to be making light of a disciplinary issue that could have serious consequences for the game and set a poor example.
