Marcus Rashford Reveals His Most Hated Football Rival
Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has made no secret about which rival team he dislikes the most. Despite growing up in Manchester, it’s not local rivals Manchester City who top his list of enemies, but rather Liverpool FC.
The 27-year-old England international, currently on loan at Aston Villa, was unequivocal when asked about his football rivalries during appearances on multiple podcasts and interviews.
“Yeah Liverpool. I don’t like Liverpool. City,” Rashford stated on the Uninterrupted podcast in 2022, immediately pointing to the Merseyside club as his primary rival.
When pressed further about why Liverpool ranked above Manchester City in his dislike, Rashford explained: “Liverpool have history so it’s a bit more bitter. But with City it’s like you don’t like them, but you don’t have a massive reason not to like them.”
This sentiment might surprise some fans, considering Rashford’s Manchester roots and City’s emergence as United’s primary title challenger in recent years.
United Rivalries: A Matter of Geography and History
In a separate conversation with United legend Gary Neville on The Overlap, Rashford doubled down on his stance:
- “Who do you dislike more? Liverpool or Man City,” Neville asked.
- “Liverpool. I don’t like any of them. I dislike Liverpool more,” came Rashford’s immediate response.
Interestingly, Neville pointed out a generational divide in how Manchester United players view their rivals:
- Older academy graduates like Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt often named City as their most hated opponent
- Neville himself considers Liverpool the bigger rival
- Rashford firmly sides with Neville, declaring “it’s Liverpool all day”
The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool remains one of football’s most storied feuds, dating back decades and featuring numerous heated encounters. As two of England’s most successful clubs, their competition transcends mere geography.
Meanwhile, Rashford’s current footballing journey has taken him to Aston Villa on loan after reportedly falling out with United manager Ruben Amorim. Though he’s yet to score for the Birmingham side, he has contributed three assists in his eight appearances.
The talented forward will look to make an impact on Wednesday night as Villa host Belgian side Club Brugge in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash, an opportunity to show his quality on the European stage.
For Manchester United supporters, Rashford’s enduring dislike for Liverpool will only endear him further to the Old Trafford faithful, regardless of his current situation. His understanding of the club’s historic rivalries shows how deeply ingrained his United identity remains, even while temporarily wearing different colors.
