Klopp’s Big Regret: How He Mistreated Liverpool Star - Hesgoal

Jurgen Klopp Reveals His One Regret During Final Liverpool Season

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he regretted one thing during his final season as Liverpool’s head coach – not giving Harvey Elliott enough playing time.

Klopp, 57, stepped away from his managerial role at Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. While he’s currently serving as the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, his legacy at Anfield remains firmly intact despite new manager Arne Slot’s impressive Premier League campaign.

The German tactician’s achievements with Liverpool include:

  • Leading Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years (2020)
  • Securing the club’s sixth Champions League trophy (2019)
  • Two Carabao Cup victories
  • UEFA Super Cup triumph
  • Club World Cup success

During a press conference in May 2024, Klopp reflected on his tenure: “It’s not that I go back and think ‘OK, what did we all do wrong?’ But if I regret one thing a little bit, it’s that Harvey [Elliott] didn’t play often enough maybe.”

Harvey Elliott’s Development Under Klopp and Slot

Elliott, now 21, was brought to Liverpool by Klopp in 2019 from Fulham. Despite being part of several trophy-winning squads, the young midfielder struggled to secure a consistent starting position during Klopp’s reign.

Under current manager Arne Slot, Elliott has shown promising development:

Despite his match-winning heroics against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16, Elliott still finds himself frequently starting on the bench. This selection dilemma was highlighted when Slot addressed the media after Liverpool’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Southampton last weekend.

“It’s always a difficult decision not to start Harvey, not to start Wata, not to start all the other ones that I don’t play,” Slot explained. “But if someone comes in for five minutes, touches his first ball and scores a goal, then to change your whole idea about all the lineups you made before, that would be a bit weird as well.”

The situation has prompted speculation about Elliott’s future at the club. On Tuesday, respected football journalist Florian Plettenberg identified Elliott as a potential departure from Anfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.

For Liverpool supporters, this situation raises questions about talent development and squad rotation strategies at the club. While Slot has Liverpool performing exceptionally well in the Premier League—currently 15 points ahead of second-place Arsenal with just nine matches remaining—the future of promising talents like Elliott remains uncertain.
