Keane HITS OUT: England Star AXED by Tuchel! - Hesgoal

The Manchester United legend didn’t hold back in his scathing assessment of one England star.

Roy Keane didn’t hold back as he offered a brutal assessment of one England star following the 2-0 win over Albania.

On Friday evening, fans got their first look at what England will look like under new manager Thomas Tuchel as they played their first match under new boss against Albania.

The Three Lions won the World Cup qualifying match 2-0, with Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly opening the scoring on his debut before captain Harry Kane put the match to bed late in the game.

But despite the impressive performance by England, there is one player that pundit Keane was not at all impressed with, and he has explained exactly why.

In his first game since replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager, Tuchel included several shock players in his starting lineup, handing debuts to Lewis-Skelly and Dan Burn while bringing players like Curtis Jones back into the team.

But it was in his front three that the German boss made his biggest decisions, as both Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford started on the wings despite failing to impress for much of this season.

Both men disappointed in the match, particularly Foden who failed to impress when given the opportunity to play in his unfavoured position on the right wing, but Keane was not at all interested in hearing any excuses for the lacklustre performance.

Speaking on ITV, the Manchester United legend rejected suggestions that Foden may be struggling as he isn’t playing in his preferred No.10 position, currently occupied by Jude Bellingham.

“Listen, Foden won’t have that problem coming up about where he will be playing, because he won’t be playing,” claimed Keane.

“I think he might be lacking in confidence. He’s definitely off it. His club form isn’t great, but we know he’s got that quality. Usually when Foden is at his best you’re sitting there thinking ‘something is going to happen’, but I wasn’t thinking that tonight.

“Usually when he cuts inside he’ll pick a pass out or get a shot away. He did none of that tonight and every time he got the ball I’m looking at him thinking ‘I don’t expect anything from Foden at the moment’.

“Wherever he’s playing you’ve got to affect the game in different ways and he didn’t do that tonight.”

Roy Keane's Scathing Critique of England Star After Albania Victory

Updated 11:27 22 Mar 2025 GMT Published 11:01 22 Mar 2025 GMT

Manchester United legend Roy Keane delivered a brutal assessment of an England player following their recent 2-0 victory against Albania in a World Cup qualifier. Keane, known for his uncompromising punditry, didn't mince his words when evaluating the performance of one particular Three Lions star under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

Friday night marked the debut of Thomas Tuchel as England's head coach, succeeding Gareth Southgate. In their first match under Tuchel, England faced Albania in a World Cup qualifying fixture. England secured a 2-0 win, with debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal opening the scoring and captain Harry Kane sealing the victory later in the game.

Despite the positive result and England's win, Keane expressed strong criticism of one player's contribution. Speaking as a pundit, Keane explained his lack of impressment with the unnamed England international’s display against Albania.

Keane singles out Phil Foden for Criticism and Predicts Tuchel Snub

Tuchel's first England lineup included some surprising choices. He handed debuts to young talents Lewis-Skelly and Dan Burn, and recalled Curtis Jones to the national team setup. However, Tuchel's most significant decisions were in his attacking trio, where he opted to start both Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford on the wings. Both players have faced scrutiny for their club form this season.

While both wingers underperformed in the match, Roy Keane focused his harshest criticism squarely on Phil Foden. Keane dismissed any potential excuses for Foden's lackluster performance, including the suggestion that playing on the right wing, rather than his preferred central No. 10 role occupied by Jude Bellingham, was impacting his game.

Speaking on ITV, Keane stated bluntly, "Listen, Foden won’t have that problem coming up about where he will be playing, because he won’t be playing." This sharp remark suggested Keane believes Foden's performance was so poor that he might find himself out of Tuchel's future plans altogether.

Keane continued his analysis, stating, “I think he might be lacking in confidence. He’s definitely off it. His club form isn’t great, but we know he’s got that quality. Usually when Foden is at his best you’re sitting there thinking ‘something is going to happen’, but I wasn’t thinking that tonight.”

He further elaborated on Foden's shortcomings in the Albania game: “Usually when he cuts inside he’ll pick a pass out or get a shot away. He did none of that tonight and every time he got the ball I’m looking at him thinking ‘I don’t expect anything from Foden at the moment’. Wherever he’s playing you’ve got to affect the game in different ways and he didn’t do that tonight.”

Keane's critical words highlight the high expectations surrounding Phil Foden and suggest that the Manchester City winger needs to improve his performances to secure a regular place under Thomas Tuchel for England.
