Lorenz Ferdinand Follows in Father’s Footsteps with Winning Senior Debut
The Ferdinand football dynasty continues as Lorenz Ferdinand, son of Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, celebrated a successful start to his senior career this Saturday. Rio Ferdinand proudly watched from the stands as his eldest son, an 18-year-old goalkeeper, made his debut.
Young Ferdinand, currently contracted with Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, has joined Havant and Waterlooville, a team in the seventh tier of English football. This move is structured as a work experience loan, designed to provide the promising goalkeeper with invaluable first-team playing time in a competitive lower league environment.
Work experience agreements are common in football development, offering young players from higher-level clubs the chance to gain practical match experience. These loans typically last for a period of weeks or months, allowing players to test themselves and develop their skills in senior football.
Goalkeeper Lorenz Ferdinand Joins Havant & Waterlooville on Loan
In Lorenz Ferdinand’s case, he will be playing for Havant and Waterlooville for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. He was brought in to bolster Shaun North’s squad following an unfortunate injury to their first-choice goalkeeper, Ben Dudzinski, who is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
Havant and Waterlooville officially announced the arrival of their new goalkeeper on Friday, highlighting the exciting addition to their team.
The club statement read: “Havant and Waterlooville Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of goalkeeper, Lorenz Ferdinand, on work experience from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion. The agreement will see Lorenz with us for the rest of the current season.”
Further elaborating on the young talent, the statement continued: “Lorenz, who is 18 years old, has progressed through the youth ranks at Brighton & Hove Albion and is currently part of their Under-21 setup. He joins Shaun North’s team to compete for a place as the season moves towards its conclusion.”
The club expressed their anticipation to see Ferdinand in action “very soon,” and they didn’t keep fans waiting. Lorenz was immediately named in the starting eleven for their Northern Premier League Division One South East match against Marlow FC.
The young goalkeeper made a positive impression at Oak Tree Road on Saturday. While playing his part in the team’s defensive efforts, he witnessed Ryan Seager secure a hat-trick, leading Havant and Waterlooville to a 3-1 victory away from home against Marlow FC.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, Rio Ferdinand, the celebrated former defender, was present in the stands to witness Lorenz’s senior debut, showcasing his support for his son’s burgeoning football career.

Lorenz Ferdinand’s dedication to his footballing dream was evident back in 2023 when he signed a management contract with New Era Global Sports agency. Interestingly, his father, Rio Ferdinand, also plays a role within the company as an ambassador and mentor, offering guidance to young athletes.
Rio Ferdinand publicly expressed his pride and support for his son on Instagram, stating: “Our eldest is on his own journey in football. Another nice moment signing with @neweraglobalsports , well earned through hard work and dedication. It’s a long road full of ups and downs, so the right and professional support is required – so step forward @neweraglobalsports. Love you Lorenz.”
Lorenz Ferdinand’s successful debut marks an exciting chapter in his young career. Keep an eye on this rising star as he continues to develop at Havant and Waterlooville!
