England’s Forgotten Talent: Why Ross Barkley Remains Uncalled Under Tuchel

Once hailed as a potential ‘greatest-ever’ England footballer, Ross Barkley finds himself out of the national team picture, having not received a call-up since 2019. Despite a career resurgence, the Aston Villa midfielder remains excluded as Thomas Tuchel takes the reins of the England national team.

Following Gareth Southgate’s departure after Euro 2024, former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has ushered in a new era for England. Tuchel’s arrival signals a fresh approach, with anticipation building for how he will shape the Three Lions.

Reports indicate that Tuchel wasted no time in implementing his own vision, reportedly ‘ripping up’ Southgate’s previous plans during his very first training session. The German manager is set to begin his England journey later this month with crucial World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

Tuchel’s inaugural England squad selection showcased a blend of familiar and new faces. Newcastle United defender Dan Burn was among the call-ups, sparking discussion amongst Liverpool supporters after an interaction with veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson in training.

A late squad change saw Tuchel bring in another current Premier League player, further indicating his active squad management approach.

However, Tuchel’s squad selection also meant omission for several notable players. Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Brentford striker Ivan Toney were among those excluded. Adding to the list of absentees is Arsenal defender Ben White, who has been the subject of debate regarding his England future, with some suggesting he should be barred from representing the nation.

Notably, and perhaps surprisingly for some observers, Ross Barkley, aged 31, was another player who did not make the cut. Barkley has experienced a career revival, initially impressing at Luton Town before securing a move to Aston Villa. His consistent performances for Villa have led many to believe he could contribute to the national team.

Barkley’s last England appearance was in 2019 when he delivered a standout performance, scoring twice in a dominant 6-0 victory against Bulgaria. Despite this impactful showing, and his subsequent club form, he hasn’t been recalled.

Roberto Martinez’s Bold Prediction: Barkley as England’s Greatest

Rewind to 2014, a year after Barkley’s senior England debut, and former Everton manager Roberto Martinez made a striking prediction. Martinez, speaking about his then-player Barkley at ‘An Audience with Roberto Martinez’ Q&A, boldly stated his belief that Barkley would become the ‘best footballer’ in England’s storied history.

There is no doubt in my mind he will be the best player England has ever had,” Martinez asserted. He elaborated on Barkley’s exceptional attributes:

  • Pace and Power: Barkley possesses athleticism to cover ground effectively.
  • Vision and Passing: He demonstrates the ability to execute incisive passes.
  • Technical Skill: Gifted with both feet, showcasing refined technique.
  • Passion for the Game: A deep love and dedication to football.

Martinez further emphasized Barkley’s significance to Everton prior to his transfer to Chelsea, stating, “He will probably be the biggest asset Everton have ever had,” highlighting his immense potential as a player.

Barkley’s move to Chelsea from Everton materialized in the January transfer window of 2018. However, his time at Stamford Bridge didn’t fully materialize into consistent success. He later joined Aston Villa on loan and subsequently ventured abroad to France.

After a stint with Nice in Ligue 1, the central midfielder made his return to the Premier League, currently showcasing his abilities again with Aston Villa.

Will Tuchel reconsider Barkley for future England squads given his current form and past potential? Only time will tell.
